Handel Arias CD
New Zealand Chamber Orchestra

New Zealand Chamber Orchestra was formed in 1987 by a group of leading players from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and established itself in a very short time as one of New Zealand’s foremost cultural assets. The orchestra tours regularly throughout New Zealand and has also given concerts in Australia and Spain (the latter at the Seville Expo in 1990). The sessions for this recording were held immediately after a tour of the North Island of New Zealand in which Emma Matthews and the orchestra presented a program of Handel and Mozart.

Donald Armstrong

Donald Armstrong has been music director of the New Zealand Chamber Orchestra since its inauguration in 1987. His incisive leadership has been a major force in creating the dynamic and exciting style of the orchestra. Donald is associate concertmaster of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and appears frequently as soloist with the New Zealand Chamber Orchestra. He is also actively involved with chamber music in New Zealand. Before returning to New Zealand in 1987 Donald Armstrong completed a masters degree at the New England Conservatory in Boston, was principal second violin of the Tivoli Sinfoniorkester in Denmark and concertmaster of the Orchestra Philharmonique de Nice. He plays a violin by Nicolo Gagliano of 1754.
